What you don't know about dental insurance - JC Dental

Did you know that oral hygiene has a huge impact on a person’s overall health? This is why it is extremely important that a person goes to a dental check-up every six months. This can prove very difficult, though, for people who don’t have dental insurance. Because dental health has such a big impact on a person’s health, it is important to have a dental plan that works for you.

Before making the decision to purchase a dental insurance plan, there are some important things you should know.

1. Corrective services and cosmetic services are not covered in all dental insurance plans

Corrective services like orthodontics are not always covered in most basic plans. Cosmetic services like veneers and teeth whitening are not always covered either. Consider your current and future dental needs when purchasing a dental plan if you feel you will need them in the future.

2. Some dental insurance plans have waiting periods for restorations

This means that you may be held responsible for paying for any dental work performed beyond a basic examination and cleaning that was completed during the waiting period, which can be anywhere between 90 days and one year. It is an important question to ask when considering plan coverage.

3. Not all insurance plans provide full coverage for preventative care

Preventative care is not fully covered on all insurance plans. Depending on your coverage, you may be responsible for a certain percentage of the fees.

4. Some dental plans do not offer full coverage

Some dental insurance providers do not offer full dental coverage. Basic preventative services like cleanings, check-ups and x rays are typically covered by most insurance companies, but any work beyond preventative coverage, such as restorative or cosmetic services, will depend on your insurance provider.  It is the patient’s responsibility to know their coverage!

5. Dental insurance companies may not notify you when benefits have changed

At times, even if your monthly premium hasn’t changed, dental insurance companies may make changes without notifying you. These changes can include adding or changing additional charges in various fees. These changes can include adding, changing or removing coverage or fees. The may also add or remove dentists from their networks without notifying patients. This is why it is important to stay on top of what is covered in your premiums and ask questions when necessary.

6. You can add specific coverage to certain plans

If you need specific coverage added to your dental insurance, some insurance companies allow you to customize your coverage. For example, if you have children and need to add orthodontic care to your plan, most dental insurance plans will give you that option. Contact your insurance provider to find out your options.

7. Some dental insurance companies put a limit on the number of certain procedures you can receive each year

Certain insurance companies can limit the number of extractions, fillings, x-rays, and cleanings you are allowed every year. They also put limits to the number of times a treatment or appliance can be provided (occlusal guards or root canals, for example). Be sure to do all your research before making a decision about your dental insurance.

Know What You’re Getting Yourself Into

There are certain things you need to research and understand before purchasing dental insurance. Having a good plan that covers you and your family is extremely important. Ask your dental office if they have an in-office discount plan and be sure to do your research before buying any dental insurance plan.
